Sandtor

Referred to for the first time in 1594 as Urfahrtor or ‘Ferry Gate’, the gate safeguarded access to the Danube and the opening for a stream through the town walls. It was here that the ferry across the Danube and other boats docked. In the event of war, the armed burghers belonging to the Schützengesellschaft (civilian militia) would muster at the Danube landing. The gate was torn down when Kremser Straße was built in 1820.
