The Red Thread

The Roter Faden or Red Thread is a one and a half kilometre circuit route through the city of Melk, allowing you to experience its history and view the historical sites – from the remains of the Medieval town walls and “Austria’s most splendid post house” from the late 18th century to the famous ‘Tiled Villa’ (Kachelvilla).

The tour begins at the Wachau Information Centre in Melk at Kremser Straße 5. Here an entertaining film takes you back to three important periods in the town’s history.

The folder serves as your guide to thirty monuments and historical venues, with informative signposts and eight information columns telling you about the history of Melk. You can even ‘view’ the now non-existent town gates at visual simulation stations. The point at the upper end of Bettlerstiege, near the abbey, offers a sweeping panorama of the city.

If you wish to hear more – history and tales – you can have an authentic figure from Melk’s past be your audio guide. Audio guides can be borrowed from the Wachau Information Centre. You can also select audio tracks to listen to on your own smartphone (via QR code).
